d) Solve for x in the following equations

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)
a) The outfitter for the school was asked to stock three different types of school jumper. He
decided to purchase 40 v-neck jumpers 30 polo-neck jumpers and 30 crew neck jumpers.

i) He bought the v-neck jumpers for Ksh. 137.50 each and sold them at a profit of 40% on the
cost price. Calculate the selling price of each v- neck jumper. (2 Marks)
ii) He bought the polo-neck jumpers at KShs. 157.50 each and sold them at ksh. 210 each. Express
the profit as a percentage of the cost price. ( 2 Marks)
iii) He sold the crew-neck jumpers at KShs. 180, thereby loosing 10% of the cost price. Calculate
the cost price of each crew- neck jumper. ( 3 Marks)
iv) Calculate the total profit he made on the sale of all the jumpers and express this profit as a
percentage of his initial outlay. ( 3 Marks)
b) Three books and five pens altogether cost Ksh. 145.00 and four books and two pens altogether
cost Ksh. 100.00. Find the cost of each of the two items. (5 Marks)
c) Find the mean of the following grouped data:

b) Maina divided his shamba amongst his four sons. The first son got twice as much as the
second. The third got 2 hectares more than the first, while the fourth got 2 hectares less than
the second. If on a pie chart the share of the fourth son is represented by a sector of 48°,
find the size of the shamba and draw a pie chart to show this division. (6 Marks)

In a production plant the length of 100 units of a product were measured to the nearest 0.1 cm and
frequencies tabulated as follows:

QUESTION FIVE (20 MARKS)
a) When an English tourist used B-grade petrol costing KShs. 7.50 per litre, his car traveled 8 Km
on each litre. The tourist used this grade of petrol for a journey in Kenya of 2432 Km at a total
cost of UK £ 72.96.
i. Find the exchange rate between UK and Kenya shillings correct to 2 decimal places.

ii. Find what the cost could have been in English money, to the nearest £, for the
same journey if he used A- grade petrol costing KShs. 8.80 per litre when his
car could have traveled 10 Km per litre ( use the same exchange rate in (a)).
(6 Marks)
b) Money is deposited in a bank that offers simple interest at a rate of 12.5% p.a. If the principal
is KSh. 200,000, find the amount after 5 years. (3 Marks)
c) Determine the number of years money will take to triple if deposited in an account that offers
15% p.a compound interest. (6 Marks)
