Question One
a) It has been said over and over again that Kenya and South Korea were at par in the 60’s.
However in 2011, the Korean economy is 100 times bigger than kenya’s. Provide a theoretical
explanation for this state of affairs. (10 Marks)
b) Discuss the role of ethics and governance in kenya’s attempts to become a middle income
country by 2030 (10 Marks)
c) In Kenya the new constitution has placed a lot of emphasis on gender and women issues. Infact
there is a provision that one third of all public offices must be filled by women. Discuss the
role of gender in development and provide your opinion on the said constitutional clause
(10 Marks)

a) Discuss why African countries should be economically developed. (10 Marks)
b) Proponents of democratic rule point at countries like Brazil and USA as evidence of its
efficacy while those in favour of authoritarian rule point at China, South Korea and
Taiwan. Critically discuss how leadership can impact on development. (10 Marks)

a) Discuss the issues that poor countries should tackle as prerequisites for economic takeoff
(10 Marks)

b) The structural Adjustment programs (SAPs) that were implemented by third world
countries with advice of the World Bank and IMF had mixed results. It had some success in
countries like Ghana but were largely a failure in many countries. Using the relevant theory
of development discuss wheter this contributed to the underdevelopment of third world
countries. (10 Marks)

a) Discuss the reasons that account for the high rate of project failure in third world countries.

b) Many countries especially in South East Asia have thrived on the back of accumulated
national savings. Discuss why domestic savings is good for development (10 Marks)

Discuss wheter development aid helps third world countries to develop (10 Marks)
In Kenya many women have chama’s where they contribute money periodically to meet their
needs. Discuss wheter such groups could become the next frontier for development in Kenya and
what needs to be done (10 Marks)
