FIRST YEAR STAGE EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR
OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
BIT 2201: SIMULATION AND MODELLING
DATE: DECEMBER 2010 TIME: 2 HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS: Answer question ONE and any other TWO questions
QUESTION ONE
(a) Define the following terms as used in Simulation and Modeling
i) Queue
ii) Simulation
iii) System
iv) System Image
v) State variable (10 Marks)
(b) Explain clearly the main programming simulation tasks. (9 Marks)
(c) i) Distinguish between a point estimate and an interval estimate (4 Marks)
ii) Let X1, X2, . . . , Xn be a random sample from an exponential distribution with parameter ß,
find the maximum likelihood estimate of ß. (7 Marks)
QUESTION TWO
a) Distinguish between model verification and validation. (4 Marks)
b) Consider a single server queuing system. The system starts at time t=0. The arrival time of
customers is: 1.2,1.7, 2.4, 4.0, 6.4, 7.0, 8.0, 8.9, and 9.6. The departure times are: 3.0, 4.6, 5.5,
6.0 and 10.0. Time is in minutes. The first in first out queuing discipline is followed. Simulate
this system for six clients and estimate:
2
i) The average delay in the waiting line (4 Marks)
ii) The average number of clients in the waiting line at time t (9 Marks)
iii) The expected utilization of server. (3 Marks)
QUESTION THREE
(a) Among the most compelling reasons for using simulation, are the benefits that are gained by
managers. Briefly discuss any three. (9 Marks)
(b) Why would simulation be preferred over other modeling approaches? (6 Marks)
(c) Starting with integer 4731, generate at least three random variates in the interval (0, 1) using
the mid square method. (5 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR
The table below shows the probability distribution of a barge arrivals per day at a port.
Number of Arrivals Probability
0 0.13

Unloading rate per day Probability
1 0.05
2 0.15
3 0.50
4 0.20
5 0.10
The unloading is done on FIFO basis. Simulate a fifteen day analysis and determine: -
