(c) (i) What is the difference between persistent HTTP with pipelining and persistent HTTP without
pipelining? Which of the two is used by HTTP/1.1? [4 Marks]
(ii) What is meant by a handshaking protocol? [4 Marks]
(iii) What information is used by a process running on one host to identify a process running on

(a) Consider an e-commerce site that wants to keep a purchase record for each of its customers.
Describe how this can be done with HTTP authentication. Describe how this can be done with

(b) (i) Why is it said that FTP sends control information "out of band"? [4 Marks]
(ii) Explain why an application developer may choose to run its application over UDP rather than
TCP. [4 Marks]
(c) Why are buffers needed at the output ports of switches? Why are buffers needed at the input port of

(a) TCP and UDP are both transport layer protocols, with partially overlapping feature sets. What are

(b) How are flow control and congestion control related problems? How does TCP accomplish each?
