QUESTION ONE
a) (i) Explain the term ‘Structured Cabling’ [1 Mark]
(ii) There are four phases that cover all aspects of a cabling project. Describe each of these
phases. [4 Marks]
b) Describe the steps involved in gathering the symptoms of a network problem in order to determine
the scope of the problem. [5 Marks]
c) The existence and broad adoption of the Internet has ushered in new forms of communication that
empower individuals to create information that can be accessed by a global audience. Discuss why
collaboration tools have become important communication tools. [4 Marks]
d) When files are transferred between a host and an FTP server, the data is divided into smaller pieces
for transmission. As these pieces arrive at the destination host, they must be reassembled to
reconstruct the original file. Explain what provides for the reassembly of these pieces into the
correct order. [5 Marks]
e) State any four external factors that affect the success of communication. [4 Marks]
f) KCA University has a small campus where 25 faculty members are located. The faculty offices and
student computers are currently on the same network. The faculty is concerned about students
being able to capture packets going across the network and obtain sensitive material. Explain, by

stating four advantages of your solution, what a network administrator could do to protect faculty
network traffic from student connections. [5 Marks]

can provide their remote offices with reliable access to applications and data on the corporate
