QUESTION ONE [30 MARKS]

(a)(i) With references from any three management scholars, define the concept “Project Management” and ; [3 marks]
(ii) Show its benefits [4 marks]
(iii) Explain the differences between project management and general management
[3 marks]
(iv) Advantages and disadvantages of management by projects [3 marks]

(b) What do you understand by the term Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)? Why is it considered relevant in project organization? [5 marks]

(c)(i) Quoting from any three Projet Management scholars, define the concept (terms) PROJECT and;
(ii) Show types of Projects and explain their roles. [3 marks]
(iii) Distinguish between a Project and Programme [3 marks]
(iv ) Explain how a Project differs from conventional business [3 marks]

QUESTION TWO [20 MARKS]
(a) You have been appointed as a new Information Technology Manager of Nyantrago Tea Project whose operations has been based on conventional management since inception. As an IT specialist, you have observed that the performance of the project is low compared to other projects providing the same services. What would be your recommendation to the Project Manager and the owners of the project to make the project productive? [8 marks]

(b) A project manager has several roles: List the roles and explain how any four of these roles are applied in your Project organization or any project with which you are familiar. [7 marks]

(c) Critical Path Analysis (CPA) and Program Evaluation and Review Techniques (PERT) are powerful tolls that help in scheduling and managing projects. Show the distinction between the two concepts and explain the role of each

QUESTION THREE [20 MARKS]

(a) An idea is like a seed that must fall on a fertile ground to germinate (Prof. Charles Soludo, 2004)’ Hence the case of a project which is an idea that should fall on a fertile ground to crate benefits. With references from any four scholars, discuss the ANALOGY and give the definition of the concept.

(b) Keroka Tea Firm (a green project) has appointed you as their manager. Explain how the process of scope management will help you to ensure that the “green” project achieves the required goals. [3 marks]

(c) Using the diagram provided below, you are required to find:
(i) The critical path
(ii) How long it will take to complete the project [3 marks]

QUESTION FOUR [20 MARKS]

(a) According to Project Management Book of knowledge (2004), Project Management software is widely used to assist with schedule development. Explain the benefits of using Project Management software (PMS) giving at least two examples of project organization using this system. [8 marks]

(b) Define the term Matrix Organization sow guidelines for effective matrix management and give two examples of organizations with a matrix structure in Kenya. [6 marks]

(c) With illustrations of a well labeled diagram, show the (process of project life cycle and explain the role of each phase/stage. [6 marks]

QUESTION FIVE [20 MARKS]

(a) Jack R. Meredith and Samuel J. Mantel Jr. 2009 state that “today we are experiencing a silent revolution form conventional functional management. Discuss this assertion in reference to project management institute (PMI) and explain the role of today’s manager. [6 marks]

(b) Using a well labeled data from a house building project. Show the activity of Gantt chart and explain its positive features. [6 marks]

(c) Critical Path Method (CPM) is a modeling technique developed to reduce costs and save project’s time scheduling. Show its basic techniques and explain how these techniques can be applied in an Information Technology (IT) project.

QUESTION SIX [20 MARKS]

(a) As a Project Manager of an organization, you have realized that the existing computer system is beginning to develop minor operational risks hence need for introducing a new system.. An an IT expert and co-coordinator in the project ream, you are asked to advice on the implementation of the new system. What would be your advice to the Project manager on the process of CONVERSION. [6 marks]

(b) Feasibility study is the process of enabling that the project is making the best use of company resources. (Burke, 2009). Explain why despite positive feasibility analysis, most projects especially in developing economies fail to achieve their goals within time frame or fail completely. [8 marks]

(c) In project selection process, there are various models to be considered. List the models and briefly explain their role in project management. [6 marks]




QUESTION SEVEN [20 MARKS]

(a) Planning and control are intentional hence like a pair of scissors which in the absence of one blade, it can not function. Explain the role of the two concepts in project management and briefly discuss how the application of the process has helped Kenya a Revenue Authority (KRA) or any organization of your choice to achieve its goals. [10 marks]

(b) What are the key elements a successful project should contain? Describe the composition of any six of them. [10 marks]
