1. a) State the functional differentiate between the following terms:

b) Explain briefly the meaning of the following terms:

2. a) List five differences between veins and arteries. (5 marks)

3. a) Give the chemical composition and function of the following fluids:

c) Explain the process of absorption of the following nutrients in mammals:

SECTION B: ANSWER TWO QUESTIONS ONLY (30 MARKS)
4. a) In an experiment, the following values were obtained: end diastolic volume =
80mL; end systolic volume = 20mL; heart rate = 60bpm; total lung capacity = 4.5
L; tidal volume = 0.8L; residual volume = 1L; and expiratory reserve volume =
0.5L. Calculate:
i) Stroke volume; ii) Cardiac output;
iii) Vital capacity; iv) Inspiratory reserve volume. (6 marks)

b) State six functions of respiratory system in higher animals. (6 marks)

c) Explain briefly factors that influence dissociation of oxygen from haemoglobin.
(3 marks)

5. a) Assume that one ventricle of a child’s heart has an EDV of 90mL, and ESV of
60mL, and CO of 2.55L/min. Calculate the stroke volume and the heart rate.
(4 marks)
b) Use a sketch to illustrate the flow of blood through mammalian heart.
(5 marks)

c) Explain briefly five mechanisms that aid in venous flow of blood back
to the heart. (6 marks)

6. a) Draw a well labeled diagram of nephron of mammalian kidney. (4 marks)

b) Describe the role of mammalian kidney in water and electrolyte homeostasis.
(5 marks)
c) When animal body temperature is below set point, it is restored by behavioural
and physiological responses. Explain. (6 marks)
