Course:Bachelor Of Science (Water & Environmental Engineering)

Institution: Kenyatta University question papers

Exam Year:2009

KENYATTA UNIVERSITY
UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS 2009/2010
FIRST SEMESTER EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE
OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (WATER ENGINEERING)

SET 519: INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER COLLECTION AND TREATMENT

DATE: Wednesday
23rd December 2009 TIME: 2.00pm – 4.00pm

INSTRUCTIONS
This paper contains FIVE questions. Attempt THREE questions only.
Question 1
a)
Describe how you would construct a large sewer line if the groundwater table is

high or the trencher are to be excavated in running sand.

[10marks]
b)
A 350 mm diameter sewer is to flow at 0.35 depth on a grade ensuring a degree of

self-cleansing equivalent to that obtained at full depth at a velocity of 0.8m5-1.
Find:
i)
the
required
grade
ii)
associated
velocity

iii)
the rate of discharge at
this
depth.
[10marks]

Question 2
Describe in detail the major characteristics of industrial wastewater and treatment options
available.

Question 3
Design a three based siphon for carrying sewage across a stream. The total length of the
siphon measured along the centre line including slopes is 80m. The invest level at inlet
and outlet ends of the sewer are 202.38m and 201.80m, respectively. The average flow
of the sewage is 180 litres per second, and the maximum and minimum flows are 250%
and 40% of the average, respectively.
Assume that following:
i)
minor losses = 6cm
ii)
flow velocity at the minimum discharge = 0.9m5-1
iii)
n =
0.013
[20marks]

Question 4
a)
What is an intercepting trap, and where is it used in a building drainage system?

If such a trap is not included in a typical building drainage system, what are the
problems
associated
with
its
absence.
[10marks]
b)
Design an outfall circular sewer of the separate system for a town with a

population of 1 million persons with a water supply at 180 litres per head per day.

The sewer can be laid at a slope of 10 in 10,000 with n = 0.012. A self-cleansing

velocity of 0.75m5-1 is to be developed. The dry weather flow may be taken as

1 of the maximum discharge.
3
Question 5
a)
Discuss in detail pressure force due to external loads and flexural stresses, acting

on a sewer pipe laid underground.

[10marks]
b)
Calculate the diameter and discharge of a circular sewer laid at a slope of 1 in 400

when it is running half full, and with a velocity of 1.9m5-1. Take n = 0.012.
