• Attempt Three (3) Questions in all
• Question One is Compulsory and has 30 Marks.

1. (a) With the aid of appropriate examples differentiate each of the following pair of
terms.

(i) Translation and interpretation [4 Marks]

(ii) Metaphrase translation and paraphrase translation. [4 Marks]

(iii) Fidelity of a translation and transparency of a translation. [4 Marks]

(iv) Consecutive interpretation and simultaneous interpretation. [4 Marks]

(b) State any four attributes of a competent translator. [4 Marks]

(c) Study the sentence below and answer the questions that follow:

“The computer, mobile telephony and man – made satellite have made world a global village.

(i) Write the given sentence line by line and below each line supply a natural equivalent mother-tongue translation. For each line again give a word for word English back-translation.
Example: The student is reading a book.
Mwanafunzi anasoma kitabu
(Student is reading book) [4 Marks]
(ii) Explain words /concepts of the text that could not be translated into your mother tongue and justify how you went about them. [4 Marks]

(iii) What aspects of translation theory helped you tackle this exercise.
[2 Marks]

2. (i) With clear and relevant examples compare translation with human
communication. [8 Marks]

(ii) Discuss any three significant factors in translation. [12 Marks]

3. (i) Evaluate five importance of translation in communication and media.
[10 Marks]

(ii) Explain five tenets of translation theory. [10 Marks]

4. (i) State five main features of comparative stylistics theory. [10 Marks]

(ii) Discuss two problems of aesthesis and translation. [10 Marks]

5. Compare the following two pairs of Bible verses translations and answer the questions that follow: John 14:1-2

(A) “Be not youre herte aftnaied, ne drede it. Ye bileuen in god and believe ye in me. In the nous of my fadir ben many divellyngists” (middle English Wycliff’s Bible.)

(B) “Do not be worried and upset Jesus told them, believe in God and believe also in me. There are many rooms in my father’s house” (modern English Good News Bible.)

(i) Identify the type of translation. [5 Marks]

(ii) Discuss three strategies used by the translator. [15 Marks]
