Section A : 30 Marks

1. (a) Explain the importance of the following management practices.

(i) Ringing [2 marks]

(ii) Docking [1 mark]

(iii) Weighing [1 mark]

(b) Explain the possible causes and intervention measures you would take against hypothermia in new lambs. [6 marks]

2. (a) What is the significance of the fat rump in sheep [4 marks]

(b) Explain the importance of identification and suggest four methods that can be used in identification in sheep. [6 marks]

3. Explain the term “forward creep grazing system” [5 marks]

4. Explain why the corriedale breed may be more relevant than the merino breed in the current Kenya. [5 marks]



Section B: 40 Marks

Answer Any Two Questions

5. You have been approached for advice on matters of sheep production by a certain ranch. Briefly outline the various steps you would take in the genetic improvement (breeding plan) of the flock of sheep. [20 marks]

6. Outline the signs of parturition and explain the role of the sheep attendant during and shortly after parturition. [20 marks]

7. Explain how inadequate feeding can affect reproduction in sheep specifically during that period; shortly before mating and all the way to the time of lambing. [20 marks]
