Question 1
a) State three design factors that should be considered when selecting a material for a twist drill (3 marks)
b) What is chipping? State four precautions to be observed when chipping (5 marks)
c) Compare and contrast a drilling machine and a milling machine (4 marks)
d) State and briefly explain the main five manufacturing processes in a mechanical workshop (5 marks)
e) What is an accident? State four ways in which accidents can be avoided when using the lathe machine (5 marks)
f) Name four factors that affect the weldability of a material (4 marks).
g) Differentiate between a single start and double start threads (2 marks)
h) State four characteristics of a good cutting fluid (2 marks)

a) Describe any three ways dangerous parts of machine tools can be guarded (6 marks)
b) With the help of a neat diagram, show how a chain lap joint is made (4 marks)
c) Explain why most aluminium structures are riveted or screwed unlike steel structures which are welded (4 marks)
d) Briefly describe any three factors you would consider when choosing a machine tool for a machining process (6 marks)

a) Specify the type of drilling machine suitable for the following operations and explain the design features which makes each of the machines suitable:
i. Several holes to be drilled at different locations on a large workpiece (3 marks)
ii. Mass productions in related operations such as holes of different sizes such as holes of different sizes, reaming or counter-boring on a single part (3 marks)
b) A 30 mm diameter high speed steel is used to drill a hole in a cast iron block 100 mm thick. Determine the machining time if the cutting sped is 20 meters per minute and the feed is 0.3 mm/rev. (4 marks).
c) Give at least three advantages of brazing compared to welding (3 marks)
d) With the help of neat diagrams describe the three types of flames that can be obtained in oxy-acetylene welding. Name at least one metal each flame is suitable for welding (7 marks)
