INTRUCTIONS:
1. This paper consists of two sections I and II.
2. Attempt ALL questions in section I (Compulsory) and any other two (2)
questions in section II.
3. Time allowed is Three (3) hours.

SECTION I: Answer ALL questions in this section
Question 1
a) Briefly explain what is meant by the following terms in adolescent psychology.
i) formal operations
ii) personal fable
iii) ego
iv) identification
v) secondary sex characteristics. [5marks]

b) Many adolescents are functioning at cognitive level that renders them unable to
practice most forms of birth control effectively? Briefly explain. [2marks]
c) In what three (3) ways can you identify formal operational thinking? [3marks]
d) Are there significant gender differences in formal operational abilities? Explain
your answer. [5marks]
e) According to Lewin (1890-1947), the adolescent is the marginal man?. In what
ways is this so? [2marks]
f) Explain the process of identity formation in adolescents. What happens if
adolescents fail to find themselves? [3marks]
g) Differentiate between objective and subjective responsibility. [4marks]
h) Briefly, explain how in your opinion a Kenyan Secondary school teacher may
apply knowledge of sex education in advising adolescents. [2marks]
i) Discuss briefly the difference between morality of constraints and morality of co-
operation. [4marks]

SECTION II: Answer any TWO questions from this section (40 marks)
Question 2
a) Discuss and explain how the five (5) main patterns of parenting among middle
class parents of underachieving adolescents contribute to academic underachievement
among these adolescents. [10marks]
b) Discuss why making wise vocational choice is a very important developmental task for all adolescents? [6marks]
c) Explain with the use of relevant examples any four (4) factors that makes it is
important to study adolescence development. [4marks]
Question 3
a) Basing your answers on what you learnt in psychology of adolescence, discuss
any five (5) practical ways of keeping a first year student joining a Kenyan public
university from starting the habit of smoking. [10marks]
b) Considering the relationship that exist between family factors and drug abuse,
discuss the situation of drug abuse in Kenya today. Base your arguments on
Kenyan university students of your choice. [10marks]

Question 4
a) Differentiate between self-concept and self-esteem. What role does an adequate
self-concept play in light of adolescents’ progress in school, delinquency, vocational aspirations, mental health, and interpersonal competence and social adjustments? [12marks]
b) Explain the five (5) stages of breast development in adolescent girls. How do
breast concerns impede the adolescent girls functioning?
[8marks]
Question 5
a) Discuss Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory as it related to personality
development of the adolescents. [10marks]
b) How is Kohlberg’s understanding of adolescents moral development different
from that of Gilligan? In what aspects are they similar? [6marks]
c) Briefly explain the similarities and differences between Freud’s psychosexual
theory and Erickson’s psychosocial theory in light of adolescent development. [4marks]
