QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)
a) Kilele is a member’s only club located in the leafy suburb of Upper Hill in
Nairobi. It boast of a bar and restaurant, golf course, a tennis court and a
swimming pool among its facilities. Members can take golf or tennis lessons,
enroll in weekly schedule events, participate in tournaments and invite guests for
certain activities. The club is managed by a board of directors that is responsible
for hiring staff and monitoring the budget. You have been commissioned to
analyze the club’s information requirements and recommend a solution. Identify
the club’s systems, sub-systems, boundaries, interfaces, inputs and outputs.

In categorizing information systems, it is important to appreciate the different
types of managers that these systems are expected to support. Discuss the
characteristics of the decisions made at one of the various levels of management
and their respective information requirement.

Document the detailed design phase of management information system
development as applied in the recently developed Uniplus system of the
university.

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)

a)
A quotation from a recent edition of a management magazine reads: “Given the
kind of attention that organizations and managers are giving to the issue of
management information systems, one would be forgiven if they thought that this
is a new invention”. Use an appropriate example in business management to
explain this state of affairs.

a)
Previously, many managers have tended to solve problems as isolated
situations that are independent from other operations of the organization,
something that has led to deterioration in the quality of the decisions made.
Identify any such scenario in an organization context and explain how the
systems approach will be expected to provide a remedy to such a problem and
the role the organization’s M.I.S will be expected to play in this kind of
managerial approach.

a)
Use the co-called porter’s value chain to explain how a management information
system will give the organization an edge over its competitors.

b)
Highlight the main challenges faced by the human resources director of a
community-based health provider and the provisions in the hospital M.I.S. that
will assist this manger.

c)
The organization’s sales force are among the people expect to benefit most form
the M.I.S but instead they rely on intuition and manual systems when executing
their various activities. Discuss the aspects of the M.I.S. that can be used to assist
this group of people.

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)
a)
Expert Systems have been touted as the ultimate information access solution
for top level executives of organizations. However, these systems are not
suited for all kinds of strategic decisions. Discuss using practical illustrations,
the circumstances under which you would or would not recommend the
design of such systems.

Discuss the make-up of a decision support system and the accompanying
tools. In each instance, cite a managerial decision-making application.

Discuss the activities of the implementation phase of the information systems
