QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)
a)
Previously, many managers have tended to solve problems as isolated situations that are independent from other operations of the organization, something that has led to deterioration in the quality of the decisions made. Identify any such scenario in an organizational context and explain how the systems approach will be expected to provide remedy to such a problem and the role the organization’s M.I.S will be expected to play in this kind of managerial approach. (10 marks)
b)
In categorizing information systems, it is important to appreciate the different types of managers that these systems are expected to support. Discuss the characteristics of the decisions made at the strategic level of management and the respective information requirements. (8 marks)
c)
Use the so-called porter’s value chain to explain how a management information system will give the organization an edge over its competitors. (7 marks)

Discuss the main features and outputs of five of the software modules of a financial accounting system using commercially available illustrations. (10 marks)
b)
Identify the new Internet applications and explain how they can be incorporated in the management information system to make it even more effective. (10 marks)

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)
The university is in the process of installing and integrated institution-wide information
system known as Uniplus, designed to consolidate under one roof all the university data and information processing requirements in an integrated way.
