SECTION A
Answer any TWO questions (20 marks each)

1.a)List five passive glucose transporters and state their Km and tissue
specificity. [8 marks]
b) Explain how glucose level, insulin and exercise regulate the function of
these glucose transports in different tissues. [12 marks]

2. a)Draw the structure of Trp operon. [3 marks]
b)Explain the regulation of Trp operon via:
(i) Trp repressor [6 marks]
(ii) Attenuation mechanism [8 marks]
c) Name two other operons which are regulated by the Trp repressor and state the type of regulation. [3 marks]

3.a)List any four enzymes of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism which are
regulated via covalent modification. [2 marks]
b) Outline the regulation of glycogen phosphorylase activity in the liver and
skeletal muscle. [5 marks]
c) Explain the role of the following compounds in regulation of glycogen
phosphorylase activity:
(i) c-AMP and Ca2+ [3 marks]
(ii) insulin, adrenalin and glucagon [8 marks]
(iii) inhibitor-1 protein [2 marks]

SECTION B
Answer ALL questions (10 marks each)

4. a)Outline the formation of eicosanoids by prostaglandin synthase complex
from arachidonic acid. [3 marks]
b)Explain the regulation of gene expression by eicosanoids and its
precursors via peroxisome proliferators activator receptors [7 marks]

5. Outline covalent modification of hepatic enzymes of carbohydrate and lipid
metabolisms in well fed state.

6. a) Giving an example, outline the mechanism of hormone action with c-AMP
as a secondary messenger. [7 marks]
b) Explain the role of insulin in the regulation of c-AMP level.[3 marks]
