b) Using Venn diagrams determine which of the following arguments are valid and which ones are invalid. (5 Mks)
i. No lawyers are criminals. John is a lawyer. Therefore is a criminal.
ii. All chicken are birds. Snakes are not chickens. Therefore no snakes are birds.
iii. All dogs are mammals. All mammals are warm blooded. Therefore all dogs are warm blooded.
iv. All researchers are clever. Some students are students. Therefore some students are clever.
v. All gangsters are unsocial. All gangsters are resourceful. Therefore all resourceful people are unsocial.

c) Whether you are writing for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, for research or for a simple laboratory report, there are certain rules that guide your writing. Discuss any ten (10) basic rules that guide scientific English writing. (10 Mks)

Q3. a) Using examples outline any ten (10) types of titles that are used in technical and scientific writing. (10 Mks)

b) Give five (5) reasons why use of structured abstract is generally preferred to unstructured abstracts in scientific writing. (5 Mks)

c) Tables and graphs are often used to present data in scientific writing. However, use of large tables and graphs in body of the text is often discouraged is they make the article difficult to read. Briefly describe the basic rules that can be applied to improve the clarity of tables in scientific writing. (8 Mks)

d) Many different styles of referencing have been developed for scientific writing over the years. Using relevant examples, discuss the main styles of referencing for scientific articles. (10 mks)

Q4. a) List the goals of the ethical and legal principles that underlie all scholarly research and writing. (3 Mks)

b) Scientific articles are intellectual properties of the persons that undertook the research and published the findings. Discuss protection of intellectual properties rights in scientific and technical writing. (10 Mks)
