Institution: Kca University question papers

Exam Year:2010

1
UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS: 2009/2010
FIRST YEAR EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF
SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
BIT 1107: INTERNET TECHNOLOGY
DATE: APRIL 2010 TIME: 2 HOURS
INSTRUCTIONS: Answer question ONE and any other TWO questions
QUESTION ONE
a) (i) Briefly describe how the Internet's connection-oriented service provides reliable transport.
[2 Marks]
(ii) What advantages does a circuit-switched network have over a packet-switched network?
[2 Marks]
(iii) What are the two main email access protocols? [2 Marks]
(iv) What are the four parts of a URL, and what punctuation is used to separate the parts?
[2 Marks]
b) (i) Suppose that between a sending host and a receiving host there is exactly one packet switch.
The transmission rates between the sending host and the switch and between the switch and the
receiving host are R1 and R2, respectively. Assuming that the router uses store-and-forward packet
switching, what is the total end-to-end delay to send a packet of length L. (Ignore queuing and
propagation delay) [3 Marks]
(ii) Why is a packet that is received after its scheduled play-out time considered lost? [4 Marks]
(iii) What is the overall purpose of the Domain Name System? [3 Marks]
c) (i) Give four characteristics of Internet stream communication. [4 Marks]
(ii) If you had a choice between DSL and cable modem, which would provide the highest potential
data rate? Explain your answer. [4 Marks]
2
(iii) Explain the four basic types of multiplexing. [4 Marks]
QUESTION TWO
a) (i) It has been said that IPv6 tunnels through IPv4 routers, IPV6 treats the IPv4 tunnels as link
layer protocols. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? [4 Marks]
(ii) What are some of possible services that a link-layer protocol can offer to the network layer?
Which of these link-layer services have corresponding services in IP? In TCP? [6 Marks]
(iii) If all the links in the Internet were to provide the reliable-delivery service, would the TCP
reliable delivery service be completely redundant? Why or why not? [6 Marks]
b) What is meant by interactivity for streaming stored audio/video? What is meant by interactivity for
real-time interactive audio/video? [4 Marks]
QUESTION THREE
a) Explain the following:
i) Denial of Service Attack [2 Marks]
ii)Packet sniffing: [2 Marks]
iii) Web cache (proxy server) [2 Marks]
b) From a user's perspective, what is the difference between the download-and-delete mode and the
download-and-keep mode in POP3? [4 Marks]
c) (i) Suppose Alice with a Web-based e-mail account (such as Yahoo! mail or Hotmail) sends a
message to Bob, who accesses his mail from his mail server using POP3. Discuss how the message
gets from Alice's host to Bob's host. Be sure to list the series of application-layer protocols that are
used to move the message between the two hosts. [6 Marks]
(ii) What is the difference between persistent HTTP with pipelining and persistent HTTP without
pipelining? Which of the two is used by HTTP/1.1? [4 Marks]
QUESTION FOUR
a) (i) Briefly describe how the Internet's connection-oriented service provides reliable transport.
[4 Marks]
(ii) Explain the difference between Client-server and Peer-to-Peer architectures? [4 Marks]
3
b) (i)What is the meaning of DNS? Explain how domain names are resolved on the Internet.
[4 Marks]
(ii) What are some of the physical media that Ethernet can run over? [4 Marks]
c) Dial-up modems, ISDN, HFC and ADSL are all used for residential access. For each of these
access technologies, provide a range of transmission rates and comment on whether the bandwidth
is shared or dedicated. [4 Marks]
QUESTION FIVE
a) (i) Consider sending a series of packets from a sending host to a receiving host over a fixed route.
List the delay components in the end-to-end delay for a single packet. Which of these delays are
constant and which are fixed? [4 Marks]
(ii) Explain the term Firewall. Why it is necessary, and how it is implemented. [5 Marks]
b) List five non-proprietary Internet applications and the application-layer protocols that they use.
[5 Marks]
c) What is the difference between persistent HTTP and non-persistent HTTP? [6 Marks]
