Working both hard and smart in school

Parents, guardians, teachers and even other stakeholders in pursuit of a literate nation keep on repeating these words "Work hard in school." It is very true that hard work in school secures one good life chances such as well paying jobs, good health, exquisite wardrobes, mansions and many more. However, there is much more than meets the eye when it comes to working hard for good grades.

The following are a few tips on working both hard and smart to not only achieve good results but also to acquire other important life skills.

1. Set defined goals. This entails writing down your aims which are within your capabilities. For example as a student, you cannot aim to buy a car yet you are not on anyone''s payroll; not unless you win a lottery. Be sure to set objectives which measure up to your potential.
2. Use resources. Resources here imply very useful materials written by accredited scholars. Such materials can be accessed in both public and private libraries.
3. Allocate enough time for private study. Allocating enough time does not mean gluing your eyes on a book the whole day. That is just part of working hard; not working smart. Ensure you have just adequate time during the day which can be utilized to grasp and acquire knowledge. These hours of study should also be within one''s capacity.
4. Make short notes as you study. This technique helps one to remember more easily the points already studied. Before starting to study new things, it is advisable to brain storm on a few older points related to the new material you are about to study. Brain storming involves trying to remember points of a certain context and noting them down as you remember them. If you don''t remember all,

then go back to the notes and refer.
5. Avoid distractions such as use of earphones during study. This is an illicit affair with our education that is rapidly growing among students. Visit a library and it will be no surprise to find several students with earphones while studying. The brain is torn between listening to the music and recording what is being read. Therefore, optimum realization of goals will never be fully achieved. Listening to music can be done during leisure time.
6. Engage in group discussion. Group discussions should not have more than four people. This is to ensure that the group''s objectives do not degenerate to other topics. In addition, a group of four people is easy to manage with regard to time management and punctuality.
7. Engage in co-curricular activities. Most students consider these activities a waste of time. However, contrary to what most people think, these activities help boost the mind which is vital for understanding education content. Moreover, these activities aid in enabling students discover other potentials outside the classroom.
8. Be disciplined, obey the school rules, society''s norms and of course the country''s constitution. This ensures you are always on the right side while averting time wasted in solving disputes against you.
9. As you sign out from that social network before you sleep, Google a word and learn something resourceful.
