Reasons why our Kenyan television stations are flooded with soap operas.

Somebody made a joke barely two weeks ago in a social website that watching TV nowadays is like taking a shower, this is because of the large number of flooded soap operas in our local TV stations. The irritating part of these programs is that they are all similar, the characters are the same, they come at almost the same time in all stations and the theme is similar, 'love between rich and poor families'. You might wonder whether the programmers of the stations were in a meeting where they agreed to air them at the same time or it is a policy, but here are the main reasons as to why.

1. Competition:
Every TV station is trying to overcome its competitors by winning a large number of viewers therefore the need to air programs that attract majority of viewers. Statistics have proven that soap operas have a larger audience compared to other programs aired in our local TV stations.

2. Pocket friendly:
The cost of airing soap operas especially Mexican ones is quite cheaper in contrast to other programs like action dramas and comedies. The programs are cheap because they have flooded the market and the fact that they are produced in vast quantity compared to action dramas.

3. No adult stuff:
These programs favor the fact that they can be aired during the day or before late night since they don't contain adult stuff.

If you are a fan of these programs you probably might be spoilt for choices and you take that as an advantage, but if you are a protestant, you have no choice but to shut down the TV or take the 'shower'.
