A society is a configuration of human beings who interact with one another in order to ensure a continued existence such that people support and relate to each other.

A school is a social institution mandated by the society to disseminate knowledge to the young members of the society and socialize them.

A teacher on the other hand is an adult representative of the society in a school organisation. He socializes the learners who are the less informed members of the society. The position of a teacher is very vital as far as the future of the society is concerned. It is through him that the societal members are developed in terms of their personality and potential.

It always the desire of the society that its members adheres to its norms and cultures hence the teacher comes into use.

(a). The teacher is an instructor - he delivers new knowledge and skills to learners. The children get new concepts from the teacher which are desired by the society. The teacher is therefore a facilitator of learning and a resource person.

(b). The teacher is an evaluator - a teacher judges the academic performance of the learners. He judges whether the teaching has been done in the right manner and materials for learning are adequate for learning. He issues tests and examinations to learners and scores them. He therefore recommends the qualifications of learners

(c). Disciplinarian - the teacher is a source of authority to ensure there is an obedience to the rules and regulations of a school. He punishes unacceptable behavior and reinforces positive behavior. This aids the children to also learn to obey the laws in the society and hence be upright members.

(d). Group leader- He is entrusted with guiding the classroom and directing the learners in

various activities, managing and organizing other activities that will result in getting the classroom work well done. He is the main planner of what happens in a classroom.

(e). Conciliator - The teacher will always act as a consensus agent whenever the learners disagree. He reconciles the differences and bring them into an agreement through dialogue. He makes a decision and judgement that would be acceptable to all the parties.

(f). Confidant - Children always go to the teacher for counselling, comfort and praise. They always identify with him at times of problems. Learners are always very free to open up to their teacher more than any other person.

(g). Parent surrogate - The teacher is entrusted with taking care of the learners' welfare. The children always spent more time with their teachers more than their biological parents. The teacher therefore has a role of ensuring these young ones grow as per the desires of the society.
