If you are aspiring to become a Pilot in Kenya and you have been searching all over the internet for information regarding flight training in Kenya, your struggles are over. I hope you will find all the information you needed here.

In Kenya we have many Flying schools which not many people know about. As far as I know they are more than ten. Almost all of them are located at Wilson Airport in Nairobi. The main are DAC East Africa flying school, Kenya school of flying, Nairobi Flight Training, 99 flying school and Skylink.

So, the first step into the world of aviation of course good grades in Maths, Physics, Geography and English/Kiswahili (Geography not a must). Then visit an Aviation Doctor for medical checkup, you need to be ‘Fit for Flying’. Aviation Doctors authorized by KCAA(Kenya Civil Aviation Authority ) are:

Dr. Wanjama, Corner house Nairobi, Tel 0723 937 619
Dr. Justin Muinde, South C, Tel 0722 317 101
Dr. Hicks, Nelson Awori Plaza, Tel 0736 786 069

Medical Fee approx. Ksh 12,000

Now with the Class 2 Medical Certificate you need a SPL (Student Pilot License). You get the SPL from KCAA. It is the one to prove you can now study aviation (Piloting).
Requirements for SPL: Be at least 17yrs of age
Be able to write, speak and understand English Language
Be in possession of a class 2 Medical Certificate
Supply 2 passport size photos
KCAA fees. Ksh 1,000

After that you are now ready to enroll in any Flying School I have listed above. The first License you do is called the PPL (Private Pilot License). Purpose is to fly in command of an aircraft with passengers however not for compensation or hire.

Requirements for PPL

Pass knowledge test for Ground School
Complete 30hrs of dual flight time,10hrs solo flight,in total 40hrs
Obtain Radio License
Pass flight test after receiving adequate training for at least 40hrs

Cost of doing a PPL referring to DAC flying school fee structure (cheapest quality in Kenya)

Ground school:Ksh40,000 Examiners fees: Ksh15,000 Navigation fees: Ksh10,000 Stationary/Equipment: Ksh50,000 Flying cost 40hrs: Ksh600,000 Headsets: Ksh45,000 TOTAL Ksh 760,000

Now after completing your PPL which can take a maximum of 6 months you move to the next step which is CPL (Commercial Pilot License). Now with this license you get to earn a big salary and fly passengers. It can take up to one year in training.

Requirements for CPL

Be at least 18 yrs of age
Hold a valid PPL
Class 1 Medical Certificate
Pass knowledge test for Ground School
Pass flight test after receiving adequate training for at least 150hrs

Cost of doing a CPL referring to DAC flying school fee structure (cheapest quality in Kenya)

Ground school: Ksh60,000 Examiners fees: Ksh30,000 Navigation fees: Ksh110,000 Flying cost 110hrs: Ksh1,650,000 TOTAL Ksh 1,850,000

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSIGHTFUL INFORMATION. ONE THING THOUGH THAT IT NOT CLEAR IS WHEN IT COMES TO HIRING OF KENYAN PILOTS,MOST AIRLINES PREFER TO HIRE FROM OUTSIDE KENYA. PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME ON THIS ASPECT. MOST GRATEFUL FOR YOUR HELP.
- WHAT IF ONE HAD AN ARM INJURY (AND AN OPERATION, THEREAFTER), CAN THAT HINDER HIM FROM ATTAINING A CPL.
