Many employed people in Kenya today are not able to earn enough to comfortably meet their living expenses. For most of these people, they are forced to look for ways to supplement their income. Others simply want to put up something to fall back on in case of an upset in their careers. There is also quite a number who are simply exasperated by their boss and want to venture out on their own. Whatever the situation for each individual, most will begin with a side hustle while still in employment. Here are some of the small businesses that they undertake.

1. Computer consulting - with the advent of modern technology, many people these days own computers but don't know how to deal with simple problems the machine might have. For those who have the knowledge, they can tap into it and provide solutions at a fee.

2. Fresh fruits and juices. With a good blender, you can make fresh fruit juices and package them in a way for easy delivery to cafes and restaurants.

3. Advertising. If you can come up with great ideas for advertising and get good locations you can begin an advertising agency. For example if you can convince building owners/managers to let you put adverts in lifts for a small fee then you will have a gold mine of advertising space.

4. Marketing Agency - if you are good in marketing establishing your own agency to do marketing and promotions for companies.

5. Teaching/tutoring. There are many opportunities for private tuition these days with many parents not satisfied with education offered in schools, they are turning to private tutors in the evenings and holidays.

6. Real estate agency/marketing. In this type of business one acts as a link between owners of real estate and potential buyers or tenants.

7. Professional

writing. This is popular with many young graduates who have either not found employment or have a lot of free time within their work schedule. If you have writing skills, finding a good professional writing company is fairly easy on the internet.

8. Entertainment industry. There are many areas in this industry that one can in into. An employed person might decide to be a dj or a musician or a poet and do his/her gigs during the weekends. A well known local artiste is for example a medical doctor by day.

Other small businesses worth considering are: a grocery store, a travel agency, a matatu business, third party agency for financial institutions, e.t.c
