2.The river must have a source.The writer talks about many characters in this novel.Akoko is married by chief Owuor Kembo, and it is through their marriage that we come to meet those other characters.
3. Akoko is chosen by the writer to represent the source of the river which is symbolized by her children and grand children.
4. Without a source a river can not flow. Akoko works hard with determinations to bring up her children who turn out to become very successful people in life.Her characters are seen in her grand daughter,Elizabeth who becomes the first girl to enter college.
5. Akoko, who represents the source,also becomes the source of change in this book.Akoko,knowing her rights,stands out unlike other women in her time and fights to overthrow, Otieno,her brother in law from the chiefdom.
