Explain why a father is the determinant of the sex of a child and not the mother

Explain why a father is the determinant of the sex of a child and not the mother

Answers

Mercy
The chromosomal constitution of the father is XY and that of the mother is XX. Each parent contributes half of their chromosomes to enable the child to have a diploid chromosomal constitution. The mother only possesses X chromosomes, and the ovum will carry one X chromosome. The father, however can either contribute an X or Y chromosome which is carried in the sperm. Contribution of the X chromosome will result in XX(girl) and if he contributes Y then the result will be XY(boy)
