Also known as hard disk drive(HDD),is a secondary storage device that is used to store information permanently

It is made up of rapidly rotating rigid(hard)disks called platters coated with magnetic material and are arranged one top of another.

Each platter consists of tracks and sectors where data is stored in magnetised spots
Each platter has a read/write head arranged on a moving actuator arm to read and write data on both surface of the platter.

Data or information is read and written in a direct or random manner.

Purpose:
Hard disks are used to store operating systems,application programs,data files and during processing, a portion of it known as virtual memory is used as temporary RAM extension.
