1. Rigging of the 2007 presidential election results; A section of voters believed that the elections were not free and fair.
2.Existing land conflicts between the Kikuyu and the Kalenjins; The two tribes has underlying issues of land that were magnified by the country's tension.
3.Lack of regard for the constitution; The activities prior to the conflict showed how little the leadership class respected the laws governing the country. The rapid deterioration of the situation was caused by the need to use excessive power on civilians and the outright disregard for the government directives to stop the protests.

Effects of the Conflicts;
1. Loss of lives and property; Many citizens lost their lives not because they were took part but because they belonged to a different tribe.
2. Disintegration; The unity that had existed between the different ethnic groups was lost. The mistrust has not been easy to overcome thus reducing the general growth of the country.
3.Reduction in the economic growth; Economic activities such as agriculture were disrupted and people displaced. Agriculture being one of the main sources of income for Kenya, the disruption caused tremendous loss in export income.
