1. Once a change is obtained it can be kept over a number of generations unlike improvement through silviculture e.g. fertilizer application which needs to be repeated annually. This advantage however, may be reduced when the environment, pest or management activities changes so that the genetic material available becomes no longer suitable.

2. The genetic material which has been developed can be kept intact for indefinite time in form of seeds, pollen, grafts or cuttings.

3. Tree breeding leads to a systematic achievement of set goals such as increasing yields and reducing the rotation period unlike when no breeding is done.

4. Tree breeding leads to an increase in the effectiveness of land for productivity, suitability and sustainability for rural communities.
