Explain the relationship between society and education as discussed in sociology of education.

a) Society and education complement each other. Society lays down values and norms that should be respected by all its members. Education, on the other hand, attempts to preserve and transmit some of the norms and values for the welfare of all members. It is through education that members of society discover their aptitudes and are progressively trained to become useful.

b) Societal growth depends on new knowledge. If members of society lack new knowledge, they risk extinction. Education enables people to be conversant with modern changes in technology. Through education, man's creativity and survival are enhanced.

c) Education contributes to upward social mobility. By acquiring education, one is likely to move from one social status to another. There is an increased possibility of interacting with people who have acquired knowledge. Therefore, the more one acquires knowledge, the higher the chances of climbing the social ladder.
