Political and social oppression
Social oppression in Kafira is not only responsible for moral degradation but also for the economic degeneration of the society. Mulili,Boss and Tumbo are representatives of the governing party that practices unfair treatment of people by denying them freedom through suppression.
Mulili oppresses Nina and Doga by denying them the right and freedom to carry out the shaving ceremony for their slain son Adika. He tells them that the grave no longer belongs to them.Nina is so dejected that she threatens to strip naked. The oppressive nature of the government is clear as Mulili says he is Boss's eye and ear and therefore there should be no ceremony. No persuasion from Jere will dissuade Mulili from denying Doga to carry out the ceremony.

When Jere expresses his discontentment with Mulili, expresses his opinion about the social oppression in the society,The askari retorts and tells him that people do not question things there..Unless Jere goes for rehabilitation he will never be allowed to mix freely with the inmates.

Oppressive nature is seen again when Jusper's parents Nina and Doga are killed in cold blood. When Jusper is released from the prison,he will no one to go home to......"his parents were found dead in the hut."Mulili must have organised for their killing. The police force are oppressive as they hinder inmates freedom. Jere's Bible is taken away from him, indeed,"The Bible is a curious thing to deny someone. Why did they do it..?''

Another form of oppression is the act of using prisoners to act in the playto entertain the visiting head of state, where his nature of visit is questionable. Kabito says that they will have to be forced to perform the play.

Kabito experiences cruel and unfair treatment when he is denied the right to get the University tender for supply of milk. Mulili's oppressive nature leads him to view kabito as a small man, consequently,he grabs the economic opportunity from Kabito. He says, yes,My tender......to unknown small man......know who man be head and neck of kafira...to my cousin to explanation him.Yes,alright cancel now.Tender Mulili's
