Definition.
Are naturally occurring substances used in pest control in agricultural fields. Obtained from animals, bacteria, plants or natural minerals .
Types
They include:
-Plant-incorporated protectants - these are pesticidal substances produced by plants as a result of gene addition to aid the manufacturing of the substance by plants to naturally control pests.
-Microbial pesticides -these are pesticides that mainly consists of viruses, pathogenic fungi and bacteria.
-Biochemical pesticides –are substances that are naturally occurring and produced by plants that contain genetic added material.
Examples.
Other examples of bio pesticides may also include natural plant derived products such as phenolic, alkaloids and vegetable oils.

For sustainable agroecosystems biopesticides can be used prior to planting mainly for soil amendments and seed treatments and also incorporated in IPM after planting .Seed treatment can be done using the bio-fungicidal to control soil borne fungal pathogens and internal seed-borne fungal pathogens
Advantages for their use in the university ecosystems include:
-Are environmental friendly thus no pollution.
-Enhances increased microbial populations.
-Reduced unnecessary pathways and increased nutrient cycling .
-Are specific.
-Have no evidence of pest resistance, have ability to multiply in target cells
Have a long persisting effect or permanent pest control.
