- The term sociology is defined differently by various authors:
1. Thompson (1982:1) defines Sociology as an attempt to study, in as scientific and systematic a way as possible, how societies operate.
2. Peil and Oyeneye (1998:1) define sociology as a social science which studies the relationship among people as individuals and as groups and the influence of social, political and economic conditions on these individuals and groups.
3. Thomas (1995:4) defines sociology as the science that studies human society and social behavior.
4. Jary and Jary (1999:630) define Sociology as the systematic study of the functioning, organization, development and types of human societies.
5. Ezewu (1982: l) defines sociology as a scientific: study of the human behaviour in groups, having for its aim the discovery of regularities and order in such behaviour and expressing these; discoveries as theoretical proportions or generalizations that describe a wide variety of patterns of behaviour.
6. Ralph Ross and E. Van been Haage (In Ezewu:2) define sociology as the study of the formation and transformation of groups and the relationship of groups and group members with one another.
- Sociology can therefore be defined as the scientific study of human behaviour in groups.

- In this definitions, sociology is further understood to be a study of social relationships between individuals in collections or groups. It is, therefore, a study of the various social interactions, activities, associations, conflicts, roles and other social phenomena in a society. In general, however, sociology does not specifically study the society. Instead, it concentrates on the study of social groups which are found in the society. For example the school groups, church groups, women’s groups, professional groups and many others. By first studying these groups, sociology ends up understanding the whole society.
