-The horticultural sector currently ranks as one of the economy’s fastest growing sectors.
-It is ranked the largest foreign exchange earner. This is reflected in a continuous year-to-year expansion in fruit, vegetable and cut flower exports.
-The annual total horticultural production is close to3 million tons.
-The value of horticulture production (both domestic and export) rose 41 % in 2017 compared with 2016 on account of good prices- sales rose from Sh216 billion in 2016 to Sh305 billion
-The value of domestic horticulture production has been growing over the years- it was valued at Sh190 billion in 2017.
-The total value of horticultural produce exported in 2017 increased from Sh101.5 billion in 2016 to Sh115 billion in 2017.
-The cut-flower export still remains the largest earner, contributing over 70 per cent of the total fresh produce annual earnings.
-In 2017, flower exports contributed Sh82.24 billion, up from Sh70.83 billion earned in 2016, representing 11.6 per cent growth, on export volume of 159,961 tonnes.
-Fruits earned Sh9 billion on export volumes of 56,945 tonnes in 2017.
-Vegetables earned Sh24 billion from 87, 240 tonnes of export in 2017.
-The major associations representing horticultural producers in Kenya are the Kenya Flower council (KFC), and Fresh Produce consortium of Kenya (FPC).
