Species – Members or individuals who are closely related (genetically) and are capable of interbreeding to produce a fertile offspring (e.g. the different human races can interbreed and offspring are viable while a donkey and a horse belonging to different species produce a mule which is sterile).

Population – A group of organisms of the same species living within a specified region (e.g. elephant population in Maasai Mara).

Community – Aggregates of different populations of animals and plants interacting with each other in a certain place (Wetzel, 2001

Ecology - is the scientific discipline that studies how organisms (plants, animals, bacteria) interact in and with natural world. Natural world include both the dead (abiotic- Physical and chemical) and living (biotic: organisms) environment

Ecosystem - refers to specific biological community (of plants and animals) interacting with each other and with the abiotic environment (physical and chemical) in exchange of matter and energy. An ecosystem can be;
• Considered Self-regulating/sustaining
• Defined normally as 'closed' with respect to minerals and nutrients (matter) and 'open' with respect to energy.
• Examples, pond, lake, forest, grassland, desert, a fallen log etc.

Biome - (made up of several ecosystems) one of several immense terrestrial regions, each characterised throughout its extent by similar plants, animals, climate and soil type (Chiras, 1991) (e.g. the rainforest, desert, savannah grassland).

Biosphere – All the earth’s ecosystems together make up the biosphere i.ethe part of the earth with the right combination of the necessities of life (H2O, nutrients, energy etc) or the part of the atmosphere that sustains life e.g. part of lithosphere, part of hydrosphere and part of atmosphere where life is found.

• Extends 8Km above and below - in and around the other ‘spheres’ – litho-, hydro-, and atmo-
The biosphere hosts the sum of all living organisms on earth: plants, animals, microorganisms

Habitat – is a living space occupied by species.
