-It is the organ of hearing and balance. It consists of 3 parts; outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.
The outer ear consists of pinna and ear canal. It is responsible for directing sound waves to the tympanic membrane (ear drum).

i) The ear drum is a membrane between the external and middle ear. It vibrates in response to sound waves.

ii)The middle ear is a air-filled cavity that conducts sound to the middle ear by means of 3 tiny, linked movable bones called ossicles. The 3 bones – malleus, incus and stapes – transmit vibrations of the ear drum to the oval window – a membranous separation between the middle and inner ear.

iii)The Eustachian tube links the middle ear to the back of the nares. It admits air from the throat and so keeps the pressure from both sides of the tympanic membrane equal.

iv)The inner ear contains the cochlea and semi-circular canals. The cochlea is a coiled tube containing nerve fibers that detect different sound frequencies. The organ of corti is a hair-cell receptor system in the cochlea which converts sound waves into action potentials which are then carried to the brain along the 8th cranial nerve.

v)The semi-circular canals contain hair cells which are sensitive to gravity, acceleration and direction of movement. Action potentials from these hair cells are also carried to the brain via 8th cranial nerve.
