Estradiol is the primary estrogen produced by the theca interna of the ovarian follicle. Estrogens mainly promote female sexual behavior and also stimulates development of secondary sex characteristics.

Other effects include induction of estrus and development of the mammary gland.

Progesterone is secreted by the luteal cells of the corpus luteum. It prepares the endometrium for implantation and maintenance of pregnancy. It helps develop the secretory tissue (alveoli) of the mammary glands and also inhibits uterine motility

Relaxin is secreted by the corpus luteum during pregnancy. Its main effect is to cause dilation of cervix and vagina before parturition. It also inhibits uterine contractions and causes increased growth of the mammary gland.
