Discuss two models used in Bilingual Education

Answers

Faith
i. Transitional Model
The Transitional Model refers to programmes of Bilingual Education that
incorporate the use to Mother Tongue or Language of the catchment area e.g
KSL in lower classes with a view of bridging the gap between home and school.
Mother tongue is later dropped at a certain level as a language of instruction and
another language introduced

ii. Maintenance Model
The maintenance model is often associated with programmes that promote the
use of two languages at the same time. The Mother Tongue e.g KSL occupies a
more important position in the curriculum than the official language of instruction
because the weaker language i.e mother tongue (which has low prestige outside
school) must be supported.
