In children, early severe impairment of the brain is generally the main cause of multiple disabilities, affecting several areas of the neurological activity (intelligence, motility, sensory sensitivity). Sometimes, the cause of a student's disability is simply unknown. Studies say that approximately three quarters of all children who have severe intellectual impairment; there is a biological cause which is typically a prenatal bio-medical factor. In other cases, there are specific genetic factors that cause particular types of impairments because of gene or chromosome abnormalities.
Other causes can include:
- Chromosomal abnormalities
- Premature birth
- Difficulties after birth e g. lack of oxygen at birth.
- Poor development of the brain or spinal cord
- Infections
- Genetic disorders
- Injuries from accidents

Whatever the cause, the result is that the child has multiple disabilities. Fortunately, thereā€˜s help available.
