Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) carries out many duties as far as education in Kenya is concerned.
Below are its functions.

  • Development of both school and post-school examinations
  • Registration of candidates for examinations
  • Administration and processing of the examinations
  • Certification - Awards various certificate and diplomas to students of different levels
  • Researching on examinations and curriculum
  • Equation of certificates from other examination boards
  • Assists students in replacement of lost and misplaced academic certificate
  • It is mandated with the task of confirming that certificates are genuine or authentic. The confirmation can be requested from time to time by government, colleges and universities as well as employers
  • Conducts various examinations at school level as well as in other institutions of higher learning e.g. colleges and polytechnics. It also facilitates marking of the examinations and processing of results
  • It works on ensuring the qualifications it confers are recognized globally.
  • Conducts examinations locally on behalf of other foreign examination bodies
  • Facilitates registration of KNEC exams to students in primary schools, secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions
  • Provides guidelines on what is expected of the students pursuing examinations and ensures that the guidelines are adhered to
