During Adika's funeral a handful of politicians tried to turn the funeral service into a political rally. The service was supposed to take more than ten minutes. The coffin was not to be carried by students and weeping in public was illegal for the academic staff. As a result of this ,Mosese gave them (government) a piece of his mind. The next day he was arrested and charged with being in possession of of an illegal drug, one kilogramme of opium. When his car was searched ,sure enough the drug was there,Mosese learnt that it had been planted there to incriminate him,
Using prisoners to act for the visiting head of state is abuse of power. The authorities know the university will not agree to act so they pick on prisoners who have no say in society. The aim of the government is,'it would symbolize national unity. That would show how prisoners actively involved in nation building in nation building as Mulili puts it.
The citizens were waiting for independence, for the kingdom to come as Mosese puts it.When it comes - it does not meet the expectations of the people. This is evidenced in the university student's strike, imprisonment of innocent people like Jere and Mosese,to the general sense of hopelessness present. Mosese says,'It was better when we waited. Now we have nothing to look forward to.
Juspers parents Doga and Nina ,are killed in cold blood through the order of the government. Jusper says ,'Those brutes murdered my parents in exchange for my release.............it means going it alone.'This is fully sustained by Mulili when he tells Boss,'that be small. You remember the old couple....'
When Regina tells Jusper that every time he wears his academic gown people think it is right for Mosese to be locked in Jusper answers her ,It does not matter what the masses. This shows those who are brave enough to speak for others are silenced one way or another.
When the University strike condemning influx of personnel into the country ,to show them that he has the upper hand ,the Boss goes ahead and orders for three hundred more.'Because they shouted .....five of which ........I deliberately sent an order for three hundred more expatriate personnel. Just to put them in their place.
