Some lakes are a source of fish. Fish provides food for the locals and income for them when they sell the fish to neighbouring towns thus improving their living standards
Some lakes form major inland fishing grounds. Fishing is therefore an economic activity earning the fishermen income and hence raising their living standards since they can afford basic necessities.
Some lakes supply water for the production of electricity. The electricity is used both for domestic and industrial use.

Some lakes are a source of minerals such as soda ash mined at Lake Magadi. The minerals are exported earning the country foreign income used for developing various sectors of the economy such as the agricultural sector.
Some lakes are a tourist attraction sites such as lake Nakuru famous for flamingos. Tourists pay foreign income which is used to improve various sectors of the economy.
