-Water supply. Windmills are used in several parts of the world on pumping water from the underground to the surface. Diesel, petrol and electrical pumps are used to pump water from wells, rivers and lakes.
-Medical purposes. Electricity has played a major role in the health sector. Hospitals use modern equipment for diagnosis and treatment of ailments. These include X-rays and scanning machines. These equipment cannot operate without electricity.
Electricity is also used in the preservation of important specimen and in the research of medicines and diseases.
- Agriculture. Diesel powered tractors are used to plough and harrow, plant, spray and harvest. Solar energy is used to dry grains, tobacco, pyrethrum, coffee berries, sisal fibres and other agricultural products. In tea factories, Wood fuel or electricity are used to provide heat for drying tea leaves. Animal power has been used in the agricultural sector for many years. Farmers rely on oxen to plough their farms.
-Industries. The manufacturing and processing industries use almost all forms of energy available although the cheapest is usually preferred. Some manufacturing industries use petroleum fuels. Light industries, particurlaly those in urban areas, use electricity to run their machines. Some processing industries such as tea factories use wood fuel while others use electricity
- For domestic use e.g. wood and charcoal for cooking and heating, etc.
- For use in industries e.g. electricity, petroleum, etc.
- Used in transportation e.g. electric cars, diesel and petrol used in motor vehicles, etc.
- Used in agriculture e.g. diesel for tractors which draw ploughs, electricity for milking machines, etc.
- Used in water supply where diesel engines wind mills and solar power is used to pump water.
- Used for medical purposes where electricity is used to run equipment for diagnosis e.g. X-Ray and scanning machines and in refrigeration to preserve specimens on medicine research
