Fermentation: Glucose solution is mixed with yeast. The enzyme zymase from yeast converts glucose ethanol

Step II
Dehydration: Ethanol is mixed with concentrated sulphuric (IV) acid and heated in the presence of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) as a catalyst.
