Give the factors that influence the occurrence of surface run-off.

Answers

Maurice
(i) Gradient of the land: The slope should be steep to allow flow of water by gravity.

(ii) Vegetation: Absence of vegetation will increase the rate of run-off.

(iii) Human activity: Construction of roads in built up areas prevent infiltration and arouse surface run-off.

(iv) Amount of water: There should be sufficient rainfall to make the soil saturated in order to allow the excess water to form surface run-off.

(v) Nature of soils or rocks: The rocks/soil should be impermeable to allow for limited infiltration and percolation for the excess water to form surface run-off.

(vi) Water table: The water table should be high to reduce infiltration and allow surface run-off.
