Materials and Equipment
1.2 mm sieve
2.Plastic shaking bottles 100 ml
3.Electronic weighing balance.
4.Distilled water.
5.Measuring cylinders
6. EC meter
Procedure.
1. Sieve the soil through a 2mm sieve to remove any large soil clumps.
2. Weigh 5 g of soil and put in plastic shaking bottles in triplicate
3. Add 5 ml of distilled water into the bottle
4. Shake the bottle for 30 seconds
5. Let the suspension stand for 30 minutes
6. Insert the EC meter into the suspension swirl it into the soil-water extract and take a
reading after 30 -60 seconds on the digital display of the EC meter.
7. Average your readings for your soil sample. 8. Write a report on determination of soil EC, comment on the implication of your readings, what are the possible challenges and the management strategy for your farm?.
