-Ferralsols are known as: Oxisols (Soil Taxonomy)
-Ferralsols represent the classical, deeply weathered, red or yellow soils of the humid tropics.
-Diffuse horizon boundaries, a clay assemblage dominated by low-activity clays (mainly kaolinite) and a
high content of sesquioxides.
-Most Ferralsols have good physical properties.
-Great soil depth, good permeability and stable micro structure thus less susceptible to erosion.
-Friable and easy to work.
-Low chemical fertility due to minimal or absence of weatherable minerals.
-Low CEC of the mineral soil fraction.
-Available plant nutrients in the soil are concentrated in the soil organic matter.
-The bulk of all cycling plant nutrients is contained in the biomass.
-Soil fertility can be maintained by manuring, mulching and/or adequate (i.e. long enough) fallow periods or agro-forestry practices.
-Liming as a means of raising the pH can combats Al toxicity and raises the ECEC of the soil.
-Application of inorganic fertilizers necessary for successive agricultural practice on Ferralsols.
-Prevention of surface soil erosion is also an important management requirements.
-Strong retention (fixing) of P is a characteristic problem of Ferralsols especially under low pH conditions.
