Desperation is the state of hopelessness.A state of desperation is noticed at the beginning of the book where Nina and Doga realizes that the person who killed their son live among them.They only have two sons,Adika and Jusper,one is killed-Adika and the other one is mad-Jusper. Nina tells Doga that the mad child Jusper is their only hope but this surprises Doga and he asks her ".....hope....you still talk of hope......"meaning that the two are hopeless and desperate.

Nina and Doga appear desperate when pleading with mulili and Jere to allow them go on with the shaving ceremony.Nina says "....you took all,you will not take the grave away from us..."Jere feels sorry on knowing that he has been send to come and stop the shaving ceremony of a person he knows and he begins to support the couple.He pleads with Mulili to let the old couple to go on with the ceremony and even reminds Mulili that he had kept quiet when Mulili had let Mustapha escape.

Regina must have felt desperate when she was beaten in order to give false testimony against her brother,she is beaten until she loses hearing in one ear.

Jusper feel desperate as all the plays he has written,none has been published.He tells Tumbo that they always tell him that the truth in his plays is too nude that he should clothe it and not to put it in black and white.
