- Never implement negative consequences until it is clear that positive reinforcement is ineffective.
- Design and implement interventions that are safe for students and staff and also which respects students' dignity and rights.
- Make it clear to students what the problem behavior is and what the consequences are.
- Deliver the consequences not just threatening to deliver the consequences, i.e. avoid making threats without consequences.
- Use punishment as a teaching tool but not as punishing tool.
