The communicative power of the English language
Once it used to be said that "the sun never sets on the British Empire". This meant that the British
Empire covered all the time zones, so that when the sun was setting on one part of the Empire, it
was rising on another.
The same thing can be said about the English language today. English is spoken as a first language
in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
It is also spoken in the Caribbean countries like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana among
others. In addition to this, English is used as a second language in over fifty countries spread across
Africa and Asia. This means that when you have a good command of English you can enjoy the
writings of people from all over the world, and you can communicate your ideas beyond the
borders of this continent.
We in East Africa embraced the English language accidentally through the colonial experience.
English came in as a welcome addition to our already rich language situation of over forty local
languages and Kiswahili. In fact the majority of Kenyans today are multilingual. They use at least
three languages: a local language, Kiswahili and English. A good number of others speak a fourth
language which may be either French, Spanish, German, Japanese or Arabic among others.
The local or ethnic language bonds a person to the history, culture and religious traditions of his or
her people. If you speak one of the ethnic languages, for example, you are able to enjoy the songs,
dances, stories, proverbs and riddles in that language. It also helps you to communicate with the
older folks who may not understand English or Kiswahili.
Kiswahili is the national language in Kenya and is used by people from all the ethnic groups. When
one speaks and understands Kiswahili, one can communicate with people from all over Kenya.
Kiswahili is in fact a "regional language", because it is spoken in a number of countries in East and
Central Africa. Lately, Kiswahili was indeed adopted as one of the working languages at African
Union meetings. Kiswahili, therefore, opens opportunities beyond the borders of Kenya.
After Kenya attained independence, English was retained as the official language because it was,
and still is, a great advantage for many of our operations. Though the original speakers of English
were the people living in the British Isles, English is now spoken as a first language in two other
continents, North America and Australia. It is also the second language for millions of people
living all over the world. Therefore, with English you can be
at home anywhere in the world. English provides us with a powerful link to the global village.
Recent developments in modern technology have enhanced our ability to speak, read, write and
understand English well. Many of the computer programmes available, for example, are made to
respond to instruction given in English.
English is also important for participation at the international level. Many reports and records on
recent developments, science and other special research are in English. There is much more written
literature in English than there is in any other language. Therefore, a student who can read and
write English well is at an advantage.
In international news broadcasting, users of English are greatly advantaged. The prominent
international news networks broadcast in English. English thus enjoys a prestigious position in the
communication of events taking place in the world.
For those who want to be part of what is happening in the world, English is a very important tool.
What does this mean for those of us in Africa and Asia, where English is learned mainly in school?
There is need to put a lot of effort in the teaching and learning of this language so that we can be
part of the vast changes taking place in the world today.

As he grew up at Sironga village in the current Nyamira district, Daniel Abuga Nyatigo
admired soldiers in uniform as they drove by in Land-Rovers. Yet, when he came of age and
made an attempt to join the Kenya Army, the recruiting officers rejected him five times
"1 had lost hope until a friend advised me to join the National Youth Service, learn a trade and
join the Army as a specialist," he says He joined the army after training as a plant operator at the
NYS.
Today, 32 years after he joined the army, the man affectionately referred to by his younger
colleagues as "Babu" and "Sokoro" (Kisii for elder), is among the Kenya Defence Forces in
Somalia.
His dream has, in a sense, been accomplished. He is a Senior Sergeant, but fate has also
conspired to have his son, Senior Private Wycliffe Abuga, 30, also deployed to the front line in
the war against Al-Shabaab
Snr Sgt Abuga is based at the KDF patrol base at Tabda, about 70 kilometers in Somalia, while
his son is at Beles Qoogani, 35 kilometers further.
Some describe the military as a national insurance scheme in which the annual budgetary
allocations are the equivalent of premiums, and the eventualities for which they are deployed the
accidents insurers compensate .for If that be the case, it is time for the soldiers in Operation
Linda Nchi to pay back for the years of training and pay that led to the derisive description of the
Kenyan Defense Forces as a career army.
Lieutenant-Colonel Jeff Nyagah, the commander of the KDF troops in the Central Sector,
estimates that 70 per cent of the soldiers currently in Somalia have been involved in combat.
Snr Sgt Abuga, who supervises the drivers on the Armored Personnel Carriers at Tabda, has had
his fair share of fighting since Operation Linda Nchi began in mid - October 2011.
The asymmetrical nature of the operation means there are no frontages and, with Al-Shabaab
using guerrilla tactics, there have been no shortage of encounters and opportunities for KDF to
test their weaponry and skills
Snr Sgt Abuga says he has been involved in 11 attacks since the operation started, the bulk of
them ambushes on the Puma APCs that are arguably the safest vehicles in the fleet.
Al-Shabaab are said to refer to the sturdy armor-clad machines as "the graves from which people
rise" and Snr Sgt Abuga was in one when they rained rocket-propelled grenades on the
windscreen.
"If you sit in one of these vehicles and come under an attack, it sounds like it is raining. You
shouldn't be worried," he says as he points out the openings through which the soldiers shoot.
He says he was with his son in convoy when they came under attack from Al-Shabaab in an
ambush. Interestingly, Snr Sgt Abuga and his son were among the first to undergo training on
driving, servicing and maintaining the new APCs when they were delivered in September 2011.
Sgt Abuga is based at Kahawa Barracks while his son is with the Nanyuki-based First Kenya
Rifles Battalion.
Now they keep in touch on the Hormund Telecom mobile phone network, which somehow
operates in the infamously lawless state and is a useful communication channel with those back
home.
Does he worry that either he or his son could be hit in one of the attacks?
"Kifo cha nyani kikifika, miti yote huteleza," he says, using the Swahili proverb that suggests
each man is born with his destiny, and there is no avoiding death.
For Snr Sgt Abuga and other soldiers in Somalia, spending the nights and a good part of the day
in trenches is normal, and nobody seems to mind the dust.
"I'm happy to have fought here," he says as we look at his reinforced trench, which he has been
converting into a bunker of sorts, immune to mortars and RPGs.
He does not foresee a longer future in the army once Operation Linda Nchi is over - whenever
that may be - but hopes for a promotion to the next rank, Warrant Officer 11, before he retires.
"If I get a little more pension and I'm able to buy myself a small pick-up, buy a few cattle and
work on my farm, I'll be one happy senior sergeant," he says. Sgt Abuga was in a convoy last
Tuesday that unearthed significantly large improvised explosive devices (IEDs) about 12
kilometers away from Tabda towards Beles Qoogani.
Al-Shabaab attempted to stage an ambush on the convoy but were repulsed by a combination of
the Transitional Federal Government soldiers and the Kenyan troops.
The Abugas were happy to be reunited, if only for a short while. Although they are a generation
apart -the son speaks Sheng, showing a silver tooth while the father speaks Kiswahili with a
thick Kisii accent-their resemblance is obvious. The son, who is also a father of one, foresees a
long future serving in the army.
Snr Sgt Abuga might not have his pick-up, cows and farm yet, but he appears to be one happy
senior sergeant.

Substance Abuse has emerged in recent decades as a major concern both on and off the job. Although reasons
vary, substance abuse can be a way that some people try to manage or reduce distress.
But it is important to be clear on what is generally meant by a drinking problem. In all cases related to alcohol
abuse, a common factor is the unfavorable effect alcohol has on the health or well-being of the drinker and his
or her associates. Common signs and symptoms that frequently indicate a drinking problem include being
constantly absent from work, causing on-the-job accidents and expressing grievances most of the time.
Alcoholic employees can sometimes go undetected for years. Coworkers cover up for those unable to perform
their jobs because of drunkenness. Even managers may be adept at concealing their alcohol abuse problems.
Their secretaries or loyal associates may cover up for them.
Alcoholics can be clever at inventing “credible” excuses when detected: “I must have a drink or two when I’m
entertaining customers, of course.”
Drug abuse, or drug addiction, exists when the taking of drugs, whether prescribed or non-prescribed, legal or
illegal, causes difficulties in any area of an individual’s life. Years ago, the stereotype of the drug user was
either of a glazed-eyed musician frantically beating his sticks on a tight skin or a person who dwelt in a slum.
Mass publicity on drug abuse has long since caused that stereotype to fade from view.
Complicating the ongoing war on drugs are changes in public attitude and drug-use patterns. It sometimes
seems that no sooner is progress made in combating one illegal drug than a different kind of substance abuse
comes into vogue. Ethyl alcohol was the social drug during prohibition (1920-1933), marijuana became the
social drug of the 1960s and 1970s and some observers believe that crack cocaine and possibly ecstasy –
another so-called upper – became the social drugs of the 1980s and 1990s. The drug of choice and people’s
attitude toward them may change, but the problem of drug abuse appears to be continuing unabated.
Pinpointing the specific symptom of alcohol and drug abuse problems is not a simple task. A supervisor’s main
responsibility therefore should not necessarily be uncovering evidence of dependency on alcohol and drugs but
instead being observant for declining job performance. Yet there are certain behavioral patterns that some
excessive users of alcohol and drugs display. These patterns can sometimes be spotted through simple
observation. Increasingly though, employers are taking more aggressive steps to ferret out substance abuse
among their workforces. A growing number of companies, especially large ones with many employees and
those in business with potential to effect public health or safety, are adopting drug-testing programmes.
The signs of alcohol dependency, unfortunately, do not always become manifest until the middle of the late
stages of the problem. No wonder some managers have mistaken an employee’s euphoric appearance for the
“look of love”. The earlier treatment begins, naturally, the earlier treatment begins, naturally, the easier it will
be. A person could experience some isolated incidents of such drinking problems without necessarily being a
alcoholic, however, alcohol abuse usually results in declining job performance.
Because there are many symptoms of drug abuse, no one person would exhibit all of them and a supervisor
should guard against assuming that the presence of one or more symptoms is conclusive of alcohol or drug
abuse.
