Introduction
A mixture is what we get when we bring together two or more substances without them changing
into something new. For example, if you mix sand and salt, they both keep their properties —
they don’t become something else. Mixtures are all around us, from the food we eat to the air we
breathe.
Understanding mixtures helps us know how different materials combine and how we can
separate them when needed.
Types of Mixtures
1. Homogeneous Mixtures
These mixtures look the same throughout. You cannot easily see the parts that were mixed.
? Examples:
o Milk and water
o Paint and paraffin
Methods of Separating Homogeneous Mixtures:
? Filtration – for separating liquid and fine solids (e.g., tea leaves from tea)
? Decantation – for gently pouring off clear liquid from settled solids
? Evaporation – for recovering a solid (e.g., salt from saltwater)
