About STCW Mandatory Course(STCW)

This course gives competency in Basic Safety as recommended by International Maritime Organization(IMO). The members are equipped with competency in Fire Fighting, First Aid, Personal Survival in the waters (Sea, streams or lakes) and individual security and social obligations.

Fees payable: Ksh. 70,000.

The course is suited to all seafarers at sea, in lakes and rivers.

Who needs to do a course?

​All crew working, or wishing to work, on vessels exceeding 500 Gross tonnage, 24m in length or carrying more than 12 passengers including commercial merchant vessels, oil tankers and super yachts. In addition, all professional maritime certification must be STCW compliant

Basic Safety Training Week
​At the Indian Ocean Maritime Training Centre the Basic Safety Training courses will be delivered over a one-week period inline with other international training centres. There is a large amount of practical training involved with some classroom work, too.

The Basic Safety Training is made up of 5 courses:
Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FPFF) STCW A-VI/1-2
The aim of this course is to give seafarers the essential education and training in fire prevention and fire fighting. During the course the student will learn the risks of fire and its prevention, the use of fire fighting equipment, responding to emergencies and finally fighting and extinguishing fires. The course includes extensive practical sessions at our on-site firefighting facility.
Duration - 2½ days


Personal Survival Techniques (PST) STCW A-VI/1-1
To give seafarers the essential education and training in personal survival techniques to include the main types of maritime emergency, the principles of survival, how to abandon ship, how to survive in the water, and how to use a survival craft in a maritime emergency.
Duration - 1 day and includes a practical in-water session.


Elementary First Aid (EFA) STCW A-VI/1-3
To give all persons intending to go to sea the education and training in elementary first aid so that they understand what to do in case of an accident or medical emergency on board, and are able to apply elementary first aid techniques.
Duration - 1 day


Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (PSSR) STCW A-VI/1-4
To give all persons intending to go to sea the understanding and training in personal safety and social responsibility enabling them to understand how to comply with emergency procedures on board, take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment, follow safe working practices, contribute towards effective communications on board ship, contribute towards effective human relationships on board ship, to understand the causes of fatigue and to know the necessary actions to control fatigue.
Duration - ½ day in the classroom


Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) STCW A -VI/1-6
To give those on board ship who do not have a designated security duty the essential education and training to be aware of the importance of ship security and the roles of those employed in its provision, to be aware of the requirements and measures to maintain ship security, and to be able to recognise and report a security risk.
Duration - ½ day in the classroom

Entry Requirements
Due to the physical nature of some of the practical exercises we require that you first obtain a seaman's ENG1 medical certificate before attending to ensure that you are fit enough to take part. The forms for the ENG1 Medical Certificate may be obtained from the Kenya Maritime Authority.

In addition, all candidates must have a good understanding of English as all instructions will be given in English.
